Fortnite, the popular battle royale game, is taking players on an underground adventure in its latest season. Following The Big Bang event, which resulted in the destruction of the Chapter 4 island, Fortnite introduces Chapter 5: Season 1, aptly titled “Underground.” This new season brings significant changes to the game, including a completely transformed island, thrilling gameplay features like boss battles, Lego-themed skins, and the addition of iconic characters such as Metal Gear’s Solid Snake and Family Guy’s Peter Griffin.
The update brings forth a revamped battle royale island with a variety of new locations for players to explore. Among these new areas is a fully-functional railway that allows players to travel aboard a train. Additionally, there are marinas, mansions, and a vast grassland area for players to navigate. The island also features a significant amount of snow, adding a new layer of visual appeal and environmental challenges.
One of the most exciting additions in this season is the introduction of five boss characters scattered across the island. Defeating these powerful foes grants players a medallion, which comes with a useful ability to regenerate shields over time. However, holding onto a medallion comes with a drawback, as it reveals the player’s location on the map, risking encounters with other players. The more medallions a player possesses, the more precisely their location is revealed on the map.
Alongside the new island and boss battles, players can enjoy several gameplay enhancements in the Underground season. Fortnite now offers an SUV for players to drive around, adding a new level of mobility to the game. Additionally, a new weapon called the Ballistic Shield allows players to defend themselves while simultaneously shooting a pistol. The update also introduces the ability to move while healing or restoring shields, promoting strategic gameplay choices. Moreover, players can now modify weapons in specific locations on the island, adding customization options to enhance their arsenal.
In addition to character and weapon customization, Fortnite now introduces vehicle customization. Players can choose from different bodies, decals, and wheels to personalize their vehicles. Once a player hops into a sports car in the game, the vehicle will shift to reflect their customization choices. Notably, certain items from Rocket League will also carry over for players who enjoy both games, further expanding the customization possibilities.
For players who acquire this season’s battle pass, they will have the opportunity to unlock all of the new boss characters. Additionally, they can expect to encounter a new version of Jones, the iconic character from previous seasons. Later in the season, players will also be thrilled to unlock Metal Gear’s Solid Snake, adding an exciting crossover element to the game.
Furthermore, Epic Games has collaborated with Lego to bring not only an in-game experience but also Lego-themed skins to Fortnite. With over 1,200 existing skins in the game, players can now opt for a Lego-style appearance, transforming characters like Peely the banana into Lego bricks. However, it is worth noting that these styles are limited to Lego experiences within the game.
The launch of Chapter 5: Season 1 comes at a bustling time for Fortnite. The recent release of Fortnite OG in November, which brought back the original island and fan-favorite locations, items, and characters, rejuvenated the game’s popularity. In fact, Epic Games reported that November 4th became the biggest day in Fortnite’s history, with over 44 million players joining the game.
