Bluesky, the social media platform that has been making waves since its inception, is now ready for a new challenge. After opening up for general signups a little over two months ago, Bluesky has announced that heads of state are now welcome to join the platform. This marks a significant shift from the platform’s earlier stance, where it discouraged recent and prominent world leaders from signing up. The decision to allow world leaders on Bluesky comes after the platform has implemented a more robust moderation approach, moving away from the initial chaos that characterized its early days.

Bluesky has differentiated itself from traditional social networks by offering users the ability to handle moderation themselves. Through its open-sourced Ozone tool, users can build their own filters to tailor their experience on the platform. This approach gives users a sense of empowerment and control over their interactions, setting Bluesky apart from platforms that rely solely on algorithm-driven moderation. Additionally, Bluesky’s feeds are designed to be more customizable, with options to choose from Discover and Popular With Friends tabs in addition to user-created feeds.

In a move to enhance user experience, Bluesky has introduced several new features this week. Users can now include hashtags in their profile bios, allowing for easier content discovery and organization. Furthermore, Bluesky has simplified the process of sharing links by enabling users to long-press a link to share it with others. These updates reflect Bluesky’s commitment to continuously improving and evolving its platform to meet the needs of its users.

While Bluesky is now welcoming world leaders onto its platform, some prominent figures have already established a presence on other social media platforms. For example, US President Joseph Robinette Biden’s account has started utilizing a limited fediverse integration on Threads, a sign that world leaders are exploring different platforms to engage with their audience. Although it remains to be seen whether Biden will join Bluesky, the platform’s decision to accommodate world leaders signals a new era of social media moderation and interaction.
