Dylan Barrie embarked on a four-year journey to create his very own graphics processing unit – the FuryGpu. This DIY project involved building everything from scratch, including the GPU itself, the PCB, drivers, and all the necessary components.

FuryGpu is based on a Xilinx FPGA, which stands for Field Programmable Gate Array. FPGAs are essentially blank silicon slates that can be reconfigured for specific tasks, similar to a CPU or a GPU. While FPGAs may not offer the same level of performance as dedicated silicon, they provide a level of flexibility that is unmatched by traditional GPUs.

The FuryGpu boasts a feature set reminiscent of the mid-90s era, with the ability to run games like the original Quake at 720p and 60fps. Some of its key specifications include a tile-based fixed-function rasterizer, four independent tile rasterizers, a 400MHz GPU clock, a 480MHz Texture Unit clock, and a PCIe Gen 2×4 host interface. While it may not be on par with the latest RTX series from Nvidia, the fact that it was built at home is a remarkable feat in itself.

Building a DIY GPU isn’t just about the physical construction of the hardware. Barrie discovered that the most challenging aspect of the project was developing the Windows driver for FuryGpu. Despite the hurdles he faced, Barrie believes that there is still room for further performance improvements, shedding light on the complexities of driver development in the GPU industry.

Barrie expresses his desire to open-source the entire FuryGpu project, although there are legal considerations that need to be addressed first.
