South Park: Snow Day! is the latest video game adaptation of the popular animated TV show, and unfortunately, it falls short of expectations. The game, developed by Question LLC, takes a shift in genre from its predecessors, The Stick of Truth and The Fractured But Whole, by offering a co-op multiplayer action experience. However, despite some promising ideas, the game is ultimately let down by significant performance issues, especially on the Nintendo Switch. The gameplay loop is unsatisfying and repetitive, with players spending most of their time hacking and slashing through generic scenarios in a now snow-covered South Park.

The missions in Snow Day! lack creativity and fail to distinguish themselves from one another, resulting in a very generic and unengaging experience. The combat system is poor, characterized by unresponsiveness and clunkiness. Players will find themselves facing frustrating performance issues – such as frame rate drops, blurry textures, and game-breaking glitches – that can hinder their progress and force them to restart missions. The strange audio mixing in cutscenes further detracts from the overall gaming experience, with audio not syncing up with on-screen actions and scenes ending prematurely.

Some Redeeming Gameplay Mechanics

While Snow Day! may have its flaws, it does have some interesting gameplay mechanics inspired by roguelikes such as Hades and Darkest Dungeon. Players can select passive ability cards at the start of missions to enhance their attacks or unique abilities. The Bull**** card, for example, allows players to activate powerful game-changing abilities, but enemies can also use similar abilities against them. Additionally, players can collect rare cards from Jimmy throughout the game, further enhancing their abilities.

Players can also upgrade their skillset by speaking to Mr. Hankey and accessing a perk tree that offers additional passive buffs. The game is structured like a live-service game, with Kupa Keep serving as a hub for accessing missions and other tools. Players can select the difficulty of missions, adjust their loadout, and even host or join multiplayer sessions. However, playing the game solo may not offer the best experience, as CPU allies are ineffective in combat and add unnecessary difficulty due to their lackluster performance.

A Missed Opportunity

Overall, South Park: Snow Day! has potential with its roguelike-inspired mechanics but ultimately fails to deliver an engaging gameplay experience. The unresponsive combat system, numerous technical issues (especially on the Nintendo Switch), and weak writing all contribute to a lackluster video game adaptation of the beloved TV show. Despite the occasional funny moments, the game falls short of capturing the essence of South Park’s humor and wit, leaving players feeling disappointed and underwhelmed. Whether playing solo or in co-op, Snow Day! struggles to live up to the critical success of its predecessors, making it a forgettable addition to the South Park video game series.
