Exciting news for fans of Japanese action-RPGs! Reynatis, a game showcased by a team of Final Fantasy veterans in the recent Nintendo Partner Direct, has been confirmed for a worldwide launch later this year. Contrary to initial assumptions, Reynatis is not Japan- or Switch-exclusive. The game is set to release on multiple platforms including Switch, PS5, PS4, and PC in fall 2024.

The development team behind Reynatis is led by Kazushige Nojima, a highly respected developer celebrated for his work on iconic titles such as the original Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 10 and 10-2, and various Kingdom Hearts games. Joining him is Yoko Shimomura, a talented composer known for her outstanding musical scores in games like Street Fighter 2, Super Mario RPG, Kingdom Hearts, and Final Fantasy 15. With such a powerhouse duo at the helm, expectations are high for Reynatis.

Upon viewing the trailer, it is evident that Reynatis is still a work in progress. The character models appear slightly rough around the edges, and there are noticeable frame rate issues, especially in the PlayStation version of the footage. The storyline seems a bit convoluted, with references to wizard cops combating a mysterious “rubrum” addiction in the city and a portal in Tokyo’s Shibuya neighborhood leading to a magical realm. The combat showcased in the trailer features fast-paced sword fighting, dodging mechanics, special abilities, and even some gunplay. While the gameplay seems familiar for a JRPG action-RPG, there appears to be depth that warrants further exploration.

Despite the early flaws and uncertainties surrounding Reynatis, the game shows promise. Players are intrigued by the vibrant recreation of modern-day Shibuya and the enigmatic storyline. The involvement of industry veterans like Nojima and Shimomura adds credibility to the project, but there is still much to be revealed before the launch. As a fan of Japanese-set games with compelling mysteries, Reynatis has caught my attention, and I eagerly anticipate learning more about its mechanics and world.

While Reynatis may not offer groundbreaking innovations based on the information available, it has the potential to be a captivating addition to the action-RPG genre. With the combined expertise of its development team and the allure of its setting, Reynatis is a title worth keeping an eye on as it progresses towards its anticipated release later this year.
