Cities: Skylines 2, although showing progress on the performance front, has recently faced backlash due to its Beach Properties DLC. Players have been highly critical of this DLC, prompting both Colossal Order and Paradox Interactive to issue a joint statement apologizing for the state in which it was launched.

The letter addressed to Cities fans, signed by Colossal Order CEO Mariina Hallikainen and Paradox Interactive deputy CEO Mattias Lilja, acknowledges the disappointment and promises refunds for those who purchased the Beach Properties DLC. Additionally, those who acquired it through the Ultimate Edition will receive compensation in the form of Creator Packs and radio stations.

The Beach Properties DLC, priced at £8.49 / $10, was criticized for its lack of scope. Instead of providing significant new features, it was essentially an asset pack with a few new buildings and foliage. Furthermore, the absence of actual beach houses puzzled many players. The release of mod tools, albeit demanded, also fell short as they lacked the capacity to import new assets.

Players dissatisfied with the underwhelming beach-themed DLC are directed to Paradox’s FAQ for refund information. The apology statement assures players of immediate and meaningful changes in the game’s development and communication strategies. The focus will shift towards enhancing the base game and modding tools, resulting in the postponement of the Bridges and Ports expansion to 2025.

Despite past setbacks, there is optimism for the future of Cities: Skylines 2. An advisory meeting is in the works where a select group of Cities enthusiasts will have the opportunity to engage with Colossal Order regarding potential improvements. While the road ahead may be challenging, there is a glimmer of hope for the game’s future.

On a personal note, the author acknowledges the timing of the controversy following a positive assessment of the game’s performance. Despite staying in their lane, the author expresses some embarrassment at the unfolding events. It serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the gaming industry and the importance of staying informed and critical.

The challenges faced by Cities: Skylines 2 and its Beach Properties DLC underscore the complex nature of game development and player expectations. While setbacks are inevitable, what ultimately matters is the willingness of developers and publishers to address issues, listen to feedback, and strive for improvement. Only time will tell if Cities: Skylines 2 can overcome its current obstacles and regain the trust and support of its player base.
