Metaphor: ReFantazio, the upcoming game from Studio Zero, is taking a different approach compared to past Persona games when it comes to player-character relationships. In a recent Japanese Q&A session, it was revealed that the game will not include any romance options for bond characters. This departure from the norm in Atlus games may come as a surprise to fans who are used to being able to pursue romantic relationships with certain companions in the Persona series.

Director Katsura Hashino explained that the decision to exclude romance options in Metaphor: ReFantazio is due to the game’s unique bond level system, which differs significantly from the systems used in previous Atlus titles. While some players may be disappointed by the absence of romance, Hashino emphasized that the focus of the game is on the bonds that players can form with characters and the impact those relationships have on gameplay.

Instead of pursuing romance, players will have the opportunity to deepen their bonds with characters in other ways. By increasing their bond level with certain characters, players will unlock new Archetypes, which serve as unique combat classes for party members. This system allows for greater customization and strategic gameplay, as players can choose which Archetype to equip on each character during battles.

It’s important to note that Metaphor: ReFantazio is not being developed by Persona developer P-Studio, but rather by Studio Zero, the team behind Catherine: Full Body. This distinction may explain the departure from traditional romance options in the game, as Studio Zero has its own vision for player-character relationships and character development. While Hashino’s involvement in the Persona series may have led to some confusion, Metaphor: ReFantazio is shaping up to be a unique experience in its own right.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is charting new territory in the world of RPGs by eschewing romance options in favor of a more nuanced bond system. While this decision may surprise some fans, it reflects the creative vision of Studio Zero and director Katsura Hashino. By focusing on character development and strategic gameplay mechanics, Metaphor: ReFantazio promises to offer a fresh and compelling experience for players looking for something different in the genre.
