As someone who has spent an extensive amount of time engrossed in virtual maps, I must admit that my geographical knowledge leaves much to be desired. While I may not mistake Africa for a country, I certainly wouldn’t be the first choice for a pub quiz team when it comes to geography. Despite my directional challenges, I do find joy in manipulating maps in strategy games like Total War, with Total War: Pharaoh’s being a prime example.
The latest expansion of Total War: Pharaoh’s introduces a new map area that is reminiscent of Mesopotamia and Aegea. This addition is part of a larger campaign rework that includes the incorporation of 80 new units spread across four new factions. Additionally, there are tweaks made to 70 reworked units for the newly added Mycenae and Troy factions, which were originally featured in A Total War Saga: TROY.
Players can anticipate improvements in the strategic campaign layer, including the introduction of the Dynasty system. This system adds a layer of mortality and succession to faction leaders, enhancing the quest to establish a lasting legacy. The update also brings over 80 new units for the Mesopotamian factions and over 70 reworked units for Mycenae and Troy, offering a fresh experience for players.
The expansion of Total War: Pharaoh’s is drawing comparisons to ‘Immortal Empires,’ the combined game megamap of Twarhammer. This parallel is not surprising, as leveraging existing content and enhancing it with new features is a common practice in the gaming industry. Despite initial concerns about the scale of the game being a ‘Saga,’ the free update has been well-received, showcasing the developers’ commitment to redeeming the Total War franchise.
On a personal note, while I respected Total War: Pharaoh’s, I found myself not as engaged during gameplay as I had hoped. Looking back, I believe that the game had the potential to be even greater with more development time. I also take this opportunity to acknowledge my lack of attention in geography class and offer an apology to my year nine teacher, who deserved better than being dubbed ‘Jesus Creepers’ by a group of unruly students.
The expansion of Total War: Pharaoh’s presents an exciting opportunity for players to delve into new territories and experience enhanced gameplay features. With a focus on enriching the campaign experience and introducing new units, this update breathes fresh life into the game. As the Total War franchise continues to evolve and grow, it is evident that the dedication of the developers to delivering quality content remains unwavering.
