The recent Benchmark test for Final Fantasy 14’s graphical overhaul did not meet player expectations, with many expressing disappointment over the appearance of their characters. The game director, Naoki Yoshida, acknowledged the feedback and promised to make improvements based on the criticism received. During a recent broadcast, Square Enix revealed that they are working diligently to implement these changes not only in the benchmark software but also in the upcoming 7.0 update, which will coincide with the Dawntrail expansion on June 28.

One of the main issues highlighted by players was the appearance of cursed characters with lifeless eyes and strange facial expressions. Yoshida explained that these issues were primarily due to lighting difficulties rather than the character models themselves. For example, some characters’ smile lines appeared unnatural due to incorrect lighting, leading to a distorted appearance. As a result, Square Enix has focused on reworking the lighting system and rebuilding certain character features to enhance facial expressions and overall aesthetics.

Among the changes implemented based on player feedback is the adjustment of Miqote characters’ teeth size. Players had expressed dissatisfaction with the smaller teeth size in the graphical overhaul, prompting Square Enix to increase the size of Miqote teeth in the improvements. While players welcomed this change, it is important to note that manual adjustment of teeth size for characters may not be possible due to the extensive work involved in redesigning character models.

The highly anticipated 7.0 update for Final Fantasy 14, featuring the graphical overhaul, is scheduled to be released on June 28 alongside the Dawntrail expansion. Players can expect to experience a new and improved visual experience with enhanced character models and lighting effects. Additionally, Square Enix confirmed that the Dawntrail expansion is on track for its release date and will not be delayed, unlike the previous Endwalker expansion.

The evolution of character models in Final Fantasy 14 demonstrates Square Enix’s commitment to delivering a visually stunning and immersive gaming experience for players. By actively seeking and implementing player feedback, the development team continues to make strides in improving the overall quality of the game. With the upcoming 7.0 update and Dawntrail expansion, fans can look forward to a fresh and exciting chapter in the world of Eorzea.
