Derek Yu, the founder of Mossmouth and the creative mind behind Spelunky, has previously addressed questions about a potential Spelunky 3. Following the release of Spelunky 2 in 2020, Yu mentioned that there were no immediate plans for a new sequel. However, he also stated that fans should not rule out the possibility entirely, hinting at the potential for a future continuation of the series.
In a more recent interview with Edge magazine in 2024, Derek Yu reflected on his feelings towards the Spelunky series. He expressed how Spelunky 2 had left him feeling more satisfied than the original game, stating that he didn’t feel the need to incorporate unused ideas from previous iterations into a new sequel. While Yu currently has no plans to start working on Spelunky 3, he acknowledged that if he were to pursue it, the structure of the game would have to evolve to introduce new possibilities.
