ICQ, the pioneering instant messenger service that once boasted 100 million registered users, is finally coming to an end. Russian company VK, which has been overseeing ICQ since 2010, recently announced that the service will cease to operate starting June 26th. This news marks the end of an era for a platform that played a significant role in shaping the way we communicate online.

ICQ was launched in 1996 by Israeli company Mirabilis and quickly gained popularity for its real-time chat capabilities. Unlike its competitors, ICQ assigned users a unique number for connecting with others, rather than relying on aliases or email addresses. It also introduced innovative features like SMS messaging and the ability to send messages to offline users.

In 1998, AOL acquired Mirabilis and took ownership of ICQ as part of its growing portfolio. At its peak, ICQ had 100 million registered users, making it one of the most widely used instant messenger services of its time. However, following AOL’s merger with Time Warner in 2000, the company’s focus shifted, leading to the eventual sale of ICQ to Digital Sky Technologies in 2010.

Over the years, ICQ underwent several changes to modernize its platform and remain competitive in the evolving landscape of messaging apps. However, with the rise of platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram, ICQ struggled to maintain its relevance. As a result, the service gradually faded into obscurity, culminating in VK’s recent announcement of its discontinuation.

While the end of ICQ may not come as a surprise to many, it is worth reflecting on the impact this platform had on the way we communicate online. For a generation of users, ICQ was their first introduction to the world of instant messaging, and its iconic “Uh oh!” alert remains a nostalgic memory for many. As we bid farewell to ICQ, we also acknowledge the role it played in shaping the digital landscape we know today.
