Rumors have been circulating that the next installment in the popular first-person shooter series, DOOM, will be unveiled at Xbox’s games showcase in June. According to Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, the new entry is said to be titled ‘DOOM: The Dark Ages’, previously known as ‘Year Zero’, and will have a “medieval inspired” theme.

Henderson described the upcoming game as a ‘medieval inspired doom world’, hinting at a setting that is quite different from the traditional DOOM games. The titles ‘Year Zero’, ‘The Dark Ages’, and ‘medieval inspired’ suggest a possible shift in the series towards exploring the Doomslayer’s life during medieval times. Could this game be a prequel shedding light on the origins of the iconic character?

It is also reported that ‘DOOM: The Dark Ages’ will be a “multiplatform” release, with Windows Central’s Jez Corden backing up this claim by mentioning that the game is “slated for Playstation” as well. While there is no confirmation of a Nintendo release, it is worth noting that the Switch has seen previous DOOM titles and DLC releases. If this new installment does make its way to multiple platforms, there is a possibility we might see it on Nintendo’s upcoming hardware.

Nintendo has hinted at sharing news about the successor to the Switch within this fiscal year. This raises speculation about the potential compatibility of ‘DOOM: The Dark Ages’ with Nintendo’s next-generation console. Given the success of DOOM on the Switch and the platform’s ability to handle demanding games, fans might have reason to be optimistic about seeing the game on Nintendo’s future device.

The anticipation for ‘DOOM: The Dark Ages’ is building up as more details and rumors emerge about the game. From its medieval inspired setting to the possibility of a multiplatform release, fans of the series have a lot to look forward to. As we await the official unveiling at Xbox’s games showcase in June, the gaming community’s excitement for the next chapter in the DOOM series continues to grow.
