The unveiling of Metal Gear Solid at E3 in 1997 had a significant impact on the gaming industry, especially for one Sony developer creating another espionage-themed action game at the same time. Richard Ham, the design lead on Syphon Filter at Eidetic (now known as Sony Bend), recalled how the trailer for Metal Gear Solid captivated audiences at the convention. The massive screen that displayed the trailer every hour drew huge crowds, showcasing the next-level gameplay and cinematic presentation of the game.

Ham mentioned that the cinematic style of Metal Gear Solid posed a challenge for the team at Eidetic, as they were also focused on achieving a similar level of cinematic gameplay with Syphon Filter. The use of camera locks and inspiration from action cinema directors like John Woo influenced the development of their game. Despite their efforts, the similarities between the two games, including their semi-political thriller storylines and stealth-action gameplay mechanics, made Ham doubt their ability to compete with Konami’s masterpiece.

The visual similarities between Syphon Filter and Metal Gear Solid, such as the grey jumpsuit worn by protagonist Gabriel Logan reminiscent of Solid Snake, added to the pressure felt by the developers. Despite the initial doubts brought on by Metal Gear Solid’s overwhelming presence at E3, Syphon Filter managed to carve out its own path to success. While it may not have reached the same level of global recognition as Metal Gear Solid, Syphon Filter garnered critical acclaim and commercial success, leading to the release of five sequels within eight years.

Although Syphon Filter may have existed in the shadow of Metal Gear Solid, Ham expressed that the journey to establishing their game as a unique and beloved franchise was a respectable accomplishment. While Konami’s iconic series set a high bar for cinematic storytelling and gameplay, Syphon Filter was able to differentiate itself and find its own dedicated fan base. Overall, the impact of Metal Gear Solid on the development and reception of Syphon Filter ultimately led to the creation of two distinct but influential titles in the stealth-action genre.
