Upon playing Beyond Good & Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition on the Switch, it’s hard not to notice the significant texture downgrades in comparison to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. Characters, objects, and environments lack the detailed textures found in their console counterparts. While the use of lighting remains consistent across all systems, the textures on the Switch are notably less refined.

One of the most noticeable differences comes in the reflections and water effects in the game. When gliding over the water in Hillys, the reflections on the Switch version run at half the resolution when compared directly to the PS5. This disparity makes the jagged edges more prominent, especially without the gaussian blur present in the Switch version. While these differences may only stand out when comparing side-by-side, they are still worth noting.

The game runs at a stable 30fps on the Switch, which is slightly disappointing given the capabilities of modern gaming consoles. However, the frame rate remains mostly consistent throughout gameplay. There are instances, though rare, where the frame rate can drop to as low as 20fps or even 12fps, especially when in certain areas of the game. This occasional drop in performance, as noted by DF, may affect the overall experience for some players, particularly those sensitive to frame rate fluctuations.

Beyond Good & Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition on the Switch offers a visually enjoyable experience with some notable differences from its console counterparts. While the texture downgrades, reflections, and occasional frame rate drops may be a cause for concern for some players, the overall gameplay experience remains engaging and worth exploring. Whether you’re a fan of the original game or curious to see what all the fuss is about, the Switch version of Beyond Good & Evil still holds its own in terms of gameplay and storytelling. Have you had the chance to play Beyond Good & Evil on the Switch yet? What are your thoughts on the visual performance of the game?
