In a surprising move, Amazon has decided to discontinue the Echo Dot with Clock, much to the disappointment of many users, including myself. As someone who has extensively tested various Amazon Echo smart speakers, I have found the Echo Dot with Clock to be my favorite due to its unique features and design. The fabric-covered LED dot matrix display not only makes time easily accessible but also adds a touch of elegance to any room. However, Amazon has chosen to replace this model with a more expensive and less visually appealing option.
Amazon spokesperson Liz Roland did not provide a specific reason for discontinuing the Echo Dot with Clock, leaving many to speculate about the possible motives behind this decision. Initially, I considered the possibility of hidden defects in the product, especially after my own Echo Dot with Clock experienced issues with freezing. However, after receiving a replacement Echo and going through multiple resets, the device started working again. This leads me to believe that the discontinuation may not be directly related to product defects.
Upon discovering that the $60 Echo Dot with Clock was no longer available for purchase, I decided to try the $80 Echo Spot as a potential replacement. While the Echo Spot offers a screen instead of a dot-matrix display, I found it to be inferior in terms of visual appeal. The screen appeared cheap and was not well-suited for my tall dresser setup. My colleague Jennifer Pattison Tuohy, who is reviewing the Echo Spot, has a more favorable opinion of the device but also notes its limitations compared to the Echo Dot with Clock.
One of the main drawbacks of the Echo Spot is its audio quality, which is not as impressive as that of the Echo Dot with Clock. Additionally, the Echo Spot lacks basic functionalities such as setting alarms with touch, which can be found in other smart displays. While the Echo Spot offers music playback controls and the ability to display various information simultaneously, it may not be a suitable replacement for those who appreciated the simplicity and elegance of the Echo Dot with Clock.
As a user who has been accustomed to the convenience and aesthetics of the Echo Dot with Clock, I have decided to return the Echo Spot and the credit provided by Amazon. The discontinuation of the Echo Dot with Clock raises concerns about the direction that Amazon is taking with its smart speaker lineup. While advancements in technology are inevitable, it is crucial for companies to consider the preferences and needs of their users when introducing new products.
