Upon discovering a game in development called Beta Decay, my interest was piqued by its unique combination of genres and ambitious goals. The game, being developed by Rotoscope Studios, promises to be a low-poly, 90s-inspired mix of dystopian RPG, survival, third and first-person shooter, with some roguelike elements thrown into the mix. The game’s setting is set to be a big open world planet, featuring dystopian cities and underground resource-rich zones. Players will have the opportunity to take on various roles within the game, ranging from trading in shops for “digital securities” to leading raids on rival factions as a faction leader.
While the concept of Beta Decay sounds exciting and ambitious, there are concerns regarding the implementation of its various features. The idea of building spacecraft with complex subsystems and engaging in high-stakes combat with permanent death consequences sounds intriguing, but there is a risk of overpromising on features that may be challenging to deliver seamlessly. Additionally, the inclusion of survival mechanics such as eating, drinking, and sleeping adds another layer of complexity to the gameplay that could potentially feel tedious and detract from the overall experience.
Despite these concerns, the gameplay snippets released by the developers showcase some promising aspects of Beta Decay. The transitions between third and first-person perspectives during combat, as well as the strategic gameplay elements such as taking cover and delivering precise shots, bear resemblance to classic games like Kill Switch and Rainbow Six Vegas. These nostalgic elements evoke a sense of excitement and anticipation for the game’s release.
As Beta Decay continues to be developed, it will be interesting to see how the developers address the challenges and concerns surrounding the game’s ambitious goals. While there is a risk of overpromising on features that may be difficult to implement cohesively, there is also potential for Beta Decay to deliver a unique and satisfying gaming experience for players. It is important to keep an eye on the game’s progress and development updates to assess whether it will live up to its ambitious vision.
