MachineGames, known for creating exceptional FPS games, is taking a different approach in their upcoming release, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. The team is not placing gunplay at the forefront of the game, viewing guns as a “fallback solution” rather than the main focus. According to creative director Axel Torvenius, the primary way forward in the game is to rely on wits and Indy’s iconic whip, rather than engaging in shootouts with numerous enemies.

Indiana Jones is not a super-powered action hero who effortlessly defeats enemies in gun battles. Instead, he relies on his intellect and resourcefulness to outsmart opponents or avoid conflict altogether. Torvenius emphasizes that Indy, being a teacher and a somewhat clumsy archaeologist, finds himself in challenging situations due to his passion for exploration. It wouldn’t be authentic to the character to have him constantly resorting to gun violence to solve problems.

MachineGames aims to capture the essence of danger in combat situations within the game. Torvenius mentions that engaging in combat should feel risky, both for Indy and his adversaries. The team wants players to understand that using guns can attract reinforcements and raise the alarm, increasing the danger levels for all parties involved.

Balancing a game that includes guns without promoting their constant use presents a unique challenge for the developers. Game director Jerk Gustafsson explains that players will have the option to avoid using guns due to the noise and risk they bring. Instead, players can utilize guns as melee weapons, providing a different gameplay experience and strategic choice for the players.

By offering players options to engage with the environment and enemies creatively, MachineGames is redefining the typical gun-focused gameplay seen in many FPS titles. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle promises an experience that prioritizes critical thinking, exploration, and decision-making over mindless shooting, staying true to the essence of the beloved character.

MachineGames’ reimagining of gunplay in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle highlights the team’s commitment to delivering a unique and authentic gaming experience. By shifting the focus to wits and strategy, players can expect a fresh take on the iconic adventurer’s journey, where every decision matters and the danger is always lurking around the corner.
