The PC version of Horizon Forbidden West has been praised for its upscalers, ultrawide monitor support, and the use of DirectStorage. However, one notable absence is AMD’s frame generation system. According to Nixxes, the developers of the game, they are waiting for AMD to release the next update of FSR before integrating it. This decision was made to ensure they have the latest and greatest technology available for Horizon Forbidden West.

Although AMD launched FSR 3 with a shader-based frame interpolation algorithm in September 2023, the system has not seen significant updates since then. On the other hand, Nvidia’s DLSS 3 Frame Generation, launched in September 2022, has received several tweaks and improvements. Nixxes explained that frame generation algorithms require specific tweaks for different games, especially concerning the user interface elements like inventory slots and health bars.

In most games, UI elements are added after rendering has been completed, either immediately after post-processing or in a separate pass. AMD has highlighted the importance of paying special attention to the UI when using FSR to prevent it from looking garbled or out of sync with the game. The upcoming FSR 3.1 version, announced at the Games Developer Conference, promises improvements in upscaling quality, but developers may have to wait until the second quarter of the year to access it.

As Nixxes has only recently obtained access to the FSR 3.1 software kit, it may take some time before a patch for Horizon Forbidden West incorporating the improved frame generation system is released. The decision to wait for FSR 3.1 demonstrates the developers’ commitment to providing the best possible experience for players. Fans of the game can expect enhanced performance and visuals once the updated frame generation system is integrated into Horizon Forbidden West.
