Instagram has recently introduced a new safety control feature called “limits” that allows users to hide DMs and comments from accounts that may be harassing them. This feature goes beyond just hiding content from recent followers or non-followers, as it now enables users to mute incoming messages from everyone except those on their close friends list. Initially rolled out to help creators handle harassment campaigns, this feature is now available to anyone facing unwanted messages and comments from bullies or other harassers.

When users limit interactions from everyone except close friends, they will only see DMs, tags, and mentions from people on their list. Those not on the close friends list can still interact with posts, but their updates will not be visible to the user who has limited their interactions. Additionally, these accounts will not be aware that their content has been hidden. Users can choose to view or ignore the limited comments and DMs. The limit can be set for up to four weeks initially, with the option to extend it.

To enable limits, users can navigate to their profile, tap on the hamburger menu in the top-right corner, and select “Limited interactions.” From there, they can toggle on limits for accounts that are not following them, recent followers, or everyone except their close friends. Additionally, Instagram has enhanced its restrict feature, which now allows users to prevent a user from tagging or mentioning them, as well as hiding their comments.

These new safety features come at a time when Instagram is under increased scrutiny from the US government regarding the safety of its young users. Earlier this year, Meta (the parent company of Instagram) introduced a feature that automatically prevents adults from messaging minors on both Instagram and Facebook. Moreover, the company has taken steps to hide content related to suicide and eating disorders from teenagers on its platforms.

Instagram’s introduction of the “limits” feature demonstrates a commitment to enhancing user safety and combating online harassment. By providing users with more control over their interactions and visibility, the platform aims to create a safer and more supportive environment for all its users.
