This unexpected timing has left many fans puzzled and uncertain about the validity of the listing. Despite the unusual circumstances, Xbox product marketing manager Tao Sila first spotted the listing, and other members of the Xbox team have since confirmed that it is indeed legitimate.
Hollow Knight: Silksong was originally announced in 2019 and has made sporadic appearances in various virtual game showcases since then. In 2022, it was featured in a showcase focusing on games set to release within the following 12 months. However, the game was notably absent from the 2023 showcase, leading to speculation and rumors of a potential delay to 2024. As of now, an official release date for Silksong remains unknown, and Team Cherry has not provided any explanation for its presence on the Xbox Store.
While much of the information in the Xbox Store listing for Hollow Knight: Silksong is standard, such as a brief plot description and screenshots, there is a noteworthy addition of an Everyone 10+ ESRB rating. The rating mentions “Fantasy Violence, Mild Blood,” signaling a potential shift in tone compared to the original Hollow Knight. It is worth noting that this ESRB rating has not been observed on the official ESRB website yet, raising questions about its authenticity and relevance to Silksong specifically.
Traditionally, video games receive their ESRB ratings towards the final stages of development, suggesting that the appearance of this rating may hint at Silksong’s proximity to completion.
