The competitive gaming world was recently rocked by a series of hacks during the Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS) regional finals in North America. Two players, GenBurten and ImperialHal, found themselves compromised mid-game in a shocking display of cheating that raised serious concerns about the integrity of the competition.

The Hacks

GenBurten, a player for DarkZero, suddenly gained the ability to see enemy players through walls during a match. This unfair advantage not only undermined the spirit of fair play but also put other competitors at a significant disadvantage. On the other hand, ImperialHal of TSM unintentionally started aimbotting, a form of cheating that allows players to automatically aim and shoot at opponents with pinpoint accuracy.

The revelation of these hacks led to the postponement of the NA finals, as the competitive integrity of the series was compromised beyond repair. The Anti-Cheat Police Department, a volunteer organization specializing in detecting and disrupting cheating vendors, suggested that Apex Legends’ anti-cheat software, Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC), may have been exploited through remote code execution (RCE) to inject cheats into players’ PCs. This not only poses a threat to the fairness of competitive gaming but also opens the door to more dangerous forms of cybercrime, such as ransomware attacks.

In response to the hacks, the Anti-Cheat Police Department advised players to protect their personal information by changing passwords, reinstalling their operating systems, and implementing other security measures. This incident prompted Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment to issue a statement announcing the postponement of the regional finals and promising a more detailed response in the near future.

The hacking incidents during the ALGS regional finals serve as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities inherent in competitive gaming. As technology continues to evolve, so too must the measures taken to safeguard the integrity of esports competitions. It is imperative for developers, players, and authorities to work together to combat cheating and ensure a level playing field for all involved. In the end, the true spirit of competition lies in fair play, sportsmanship, and respect for the game.
