The Trails series, developed by Nihon Falcom, has become known for its extensive and immersive storytelling that spans over 20 years. With a total of 11 games and three distinct story arcs, newcomers are faced with the daunting task of playing through 658 hours of gameplay to fully understand the series.

Company president, Toshihiro Kondo, revealed that the current arc in the Trails series, particularly focused on Calvard, would have been impossible to write when the developers were in their 20s. Kondo emphasized the importance of life experience in shaping the narrative, stating that the team needed to witness various societal changes and challenges to create a storyline that resonates with players on a deeper level.

Kondo expressed the desire to incorporate real-world issues and reflections of society into the series, moving away from a purely fantasy-based setting. By drawing from personal experiences of both the developers and the evolving world around them, the Trails series aims to address themes of injustice, inequality, and resilience in a more authentic and relatable manner.

One of the key aspects highlighted by Kondo is the diverse range of characters encountered in the Calvard arc – students, immigrants, individuals from LGBTQ+ communities, and more. Regardless of their backgrounds, each character is depicted as navigating through life and striving to overcome obstacles, reflecting the complexities and nuances of the real world.

As Kondo approaches the age of 50, he acknowledges the valuable insights gained from years of experience, both personally and professionally. The ability to craft a narrative that captures the essence of human struggles and triumphs is a testament to the maturity and depth of storytelling that comes with age.

Overall, the evolution of the Trails series over the past two decades demonstrates a commitment to growth, empathy, and authenticity in storytelling. By drawing from real-life experiences and societal changes, the developers have succeeded in creating a rich and compelling narrative that resonates with players of all backgrounds.
