After a very mixed reception to the latest Helldivers 2 update, the game’s director is tackling the feedback with a 60-day plan to make things right, alongside a list of longer-term changes the studio intends to make in how it communicates with players. The director acknowledges that they did not hit their target with the Escalation of Freedom update and takes full responsibility for the shortcomings in game balance and direction.

In a message to players on social media platforms like Reddit, game director Mikael E emphasizes the importance of action over words. He outlines a plan to address the issues raised by the community within the next 60 days. This includes a commitment to re-examine the approach to balance, rework gameplay mechanics, prioritize bug fixes, improve game performance, and rework certain in-game weapons like Chargers and flamethrowers.

The director highlights the studio’s intention to make balance changes that prioritize fun gameplay rather than simply striving for symmetry. One example of this is the tweak to the fire damage mechanic to enhance the effectiveness of the flamethrower as a close-range support weapon. Additionally, efforts will be made to reduce excessive ragdolling, enhance primary weapons, and create a more engaging combat experience for players.

Acknowledging that many players are dissatisfied with the current state of the game, Mikael E stresses the need for immediate action. The team plans to address gameplay-impacting bugs promptly, improve frame rate performance, and revisit the design of Chargers to ensure a more balanced and enjoyable gaming experience.

As Helldivers 2 moves forward, the studio aims to foster a more transparent and responsive relationship with the player community. By actively listening to feedback, implementing necessary changes, and prioritizing the player experience, the team hopes to regain the trust and support of their audience. The director’s 60-day plan is a step in the right direction towards creating a more engaging and balanced game environment for current and future players alike.
