Humane, a startup founded by former Apple employees Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, has recently put its poorly received AI Pin wearable computer up for sale. Despite initial promises of being an always-on AI assistant, the $699 device has faced criticism for its slow responses and lackluster user experience. Now, Humane is seeking a buyer for its business, with a reported price tag of $750 million to $1 billion.
The AI Pin’s Features and Shortcomings
The AI Pin operates on Humane’s proprietary operating system, CosmOS, which utilizes a network of AI models to provide voice query responses and analyze the device’s surroundings through its built-in camera. Additionally, the device projects a laser “display” onto the wearer’s palm for certain interactions. However, the wearable requires a monthly subscription to remain active, adding to the overall cost of ownership.
Despite these unique features, the AI Pin has been criticized for its underdeveloped software, inconsistent performance, and hardware issues such as poor battery life and overheating. In response to these concerns, Humane has promised firmware updates to address bugs and recently integrated OpenAI’s GPT-4o model to enhance the device’s capabilities.
