A recent study from an SEO company has revealed that Google has been displaying its AI-generated search results less frequently in recent weeks. The data collected by BrightEdge shows a significant drop in AI Overviews appearing in search queries, decreasing from 11 percent on June 1st to just 7 percent on June 30th.

Furthermore, the study indicates that AI Overviews now cite sources such as Reddit and Quora far less than they did previously. This shift may be a result of Google addressing instances of bizarre search results, such as recommending putting glue on pizza and suggesting eating rocks, which were sourced from user-generated content on Reddit and articles from The Onion.

In response to the findings of the study, Google has defended its AI Overviews but acknowledged the need for adjustments. Google spokesperson Ashley Thompson stated that the study’s results do not align with what Google has observed and criticized the methodology used. Additionally, Thompson mentioned that the study may have confused users who have opted into the experimental Search Labs features with those who have not.

AI Overviews are a crucial initiative for Google as they aim to provide valuable information to users. However, if users do not find them useful or trustworthy, they may turn to competing products offered by companies like Microsoft, OpenAI, and Perplexity. This potential loss of users could have significant implications for Google’s search engine market share.

Despite the recent adjustments, Google remains optimistic about the future of AI Overviews. CEO Sundar Pichai has expressed positive feedback from users regarding the feature, but the company continues to fine-tune its implementation to ensure optimal performance. Recent technical updates have been made to improve the quality of responses generated by AI Overviews.

Google’s AI-generated search results have seen a decrease in frequency, citing changes in content sources and addressing issues with nonsensical recommendations. While Google is committed to refining its AI Overviews to provide maximum value to users, the impact of these changes on user perception and market competitiveness remains to be seen.
