Valve took an innovative approach to celebrate the launch of the Steam Deck OLED by constructing an orb made from 100 OLED prototypes they had available. Instead of opting for a traditional launch trailer created digitally, Valve decided to use practical photography techniques for the creation. This decision led to the development of a behind-the-scenes timelapse video and blog post that detailed the entire process of making the orb and synchronizing the 100 Steam Deck OLED prototypes to illuminate the scene in-camera. The inspiration for using OLED screens as the main lighting source came from the remarkably bright new panels that Valve had on hand.
The challenge of lighting a central “hero” device with 100 prototype units required Valve to think creatively about the setup. The decision to build a large, metal orb to surround the device was unconventional but necessary to achieve the desired effect. The shopping list for the shoot included a unique combination of items that only Valve could gather, showcasing the company’s resourcefulness and ability to take on such a creative endeavor.
Apart from the physical construction of the Steam Deck OLED orb frame, Valve faced technical challenges in controlling all the screens effectively. Leveraging the Linux PC capabilities of the Deck, Valve utilized off-the-shelf solutions to network the devices and display content with minimal latency. By using OBS with a specific plugin called NDI, Valve was able to stream video to the orb efficiently. Additionally, creating a video template to eliminate distortion and accurately map the locations of each OLED prototype screen in flat space was essential for achieving the desired visual impact.
After completing the launch trailer, Valve decided to keep the orb intact and installed it in the lobby of their offices. The orb serves as a captivating display that is sure to attract visitors who will admire its glow. However, maintaining the screens at peak brightness is vital to ensure longevity and prevent wear over time.
