PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, often overshadowed by Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode, is making a bold move by bringing back its original map, Erangel, now called Erangel Classic. This decision seems to be inspired by Fortnite’s successful journey through its past seasons with Season OG. The revival of Erangel Classic includes not only the original map layout and locations lost in previous updates but also significant rebalancing of weapons, weather conditions, and game interfaces.

In addition to the return of familiar map elements, Erangel Classic features reduced weapon recoil, longer time to knock down enemies, reintroduction of bench weapons, and the revival of fog and rain weather conditions. The game’s user interface has also been tweaked to include “vintage” map, minimap, and fonts that aim to capture the nostalgic essence of 2017. Moreover, players will once again encounter the Tommy Gun in care packages and have the opportunity to pick up clothes and helmets from the ground, reminiscent of the game’s early days.

Erangel Classic will replace the current map evolution in PUBG for a two-week period, from May 14th to May 28th. Players can access the classic map by participating in a Normal Match during this timeframe. The developers of PUBG are likely hoping that this trip down memory lane will rejuvenate the game and attract both new and returning players.

Competition with Fortnite

This move by PUBG to revisit its roots and introduce gameplay elements reminiscent of Fortnite is not the first time the game has taken inspiration from its competitor. The addition of destructible terrain in recent updates also signaled a shift towards a more dynamic and interactive gaming experience, akin to Fortnite’s build-and-destroy mechanics. It appears that PUBG is attempting to tap into the success of Fortnite by incorporating elements that have resonated with millions of players worldwide.

The return of Erangel Classic in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds signifies a strategic effort by the developers to breathe new life into the game by embracing its origins and adopting successful elements from its competitors. Whether this nostalgic journey will lead to a resurgence in popularity for PUBG remains to be seen, but it certainly demonstrates the game’s willingness to adapt and evolve in a highly competitive gaming landscape.
