One significant effort towards this goal is the Shinra Archaeology Cut mod, which has been gradually updating different parts of the game. The most recent update focuses on retranslating the game script up to the Corel Prison events and introducing a range of new optional features.
Final Fantasy 7 was known for its quirky English translations, with infamous lines like “This guy are sick.” While the modern PC port addressed some of these issues, certain parts of the game were still poorly translated. The new mod aims to rectify these errors and provide a more coherent and accurate script.
One interesting addition to the mod is giving Cait Sith an authentic Scottish accent. This decision is based on the character’s origin from Scottish folklore, specifically a creature known as cat-sith. By incorporating this accent, the character’s portrayal aligns more closely with its mythological background. Additionally, players can now choose to revert several of the game’s background images to their original Japanese versions, instead of the altered images from FFVII International.
Visual Upgrades
In addition to the script and background changes, the mod introduces options to restore early versions of the game’s FMVs (full motion videos) and an alternate version of the ending FMV with dialogue from Tetsuya Nomura’s original storyboard. These visual enhancements give players a unique perspective on the game’s development process and showcase different creative choices that were considered during production.
Exploring Concept Designs
Fans will also appreciate the inclusion of Yuffie’s optional red and white costume, inspired by her early concept design. This feature allows players to experience an alternative look for the character, providing insights into the evolution of character designs throughout the game’s development.
The ongoing efforts to restore cut content, refine translations, and enhance visual elements in Final Fantasy 7 demonstrate the dedication of the fan community to preserving and improving this beloved classic.
