Tilley initially built a soccer-ball controller for use with Katamari Damacy before transitioning to creating the monkey ball controller for Super Monkey Ball.
The DIY controller consists of a physical monkey model inside a ball, which rotates like a trackball to control the in-game character. By using an optical mouse underneath the ball, the movement is detected, allowing for intuitive gameplay. To ensure smooth tracking, Tilley added a deodorant roller underneath the ball to maintain consistent height and movement. The result is a unique and engaging way to play Super Monkey Ball.
Despite the success of the current design, Dr. Tom Tilley has ambitious plans for future upgrades to the monkey ball controller. He intends to add hinged legs with mount points for AiAi’s knees, along with a trailing wheel and crank mechanism to simulate AiAi running inside the ball as it rolls. These upgrades aim to enhance the immersive experience of playing Super Monkey Ball using this innovative controller.
