The case of Brendan Depa, an 18-year-old sentenced to five years in state prison for brutally beating a high school teaching assistant over a Nintendo Switch, has shocked many. The incident, which took place at Matanzas High School in Palm Coast, Florida, on February 21, 2023, was captured on video and widely reported. Depa’s actions towards Joan Naydich, the teaching assistant, were violent and disturbing, leaving Naydich with significant physical and emotional trauma.
During the trial, Circuit Judge Terence Perkins expressed his dismay at the level of violence displayed by Depa. Not only did Depa physically assault Naydich by pushing her to the ground and repeatedly kicking and punching her, but he also screamed obscenities and spat on her during the incident. Judge Perkins highlighted Depa’s lack of remorse, stating that he pursued Naydich down the hallway and violently attacked her without hesitation. The severity of the attack led to Depa being sentenced to five years in prison and 15 years of probation upon release.
Depa’s defense team argued that his autism spectrum disorder should be taken into consideration when determining the sentence. Furthermore, his mother, Leanne Depa, criticized the school for failing to adequately address her son’s disabilities, suggesting that racial and disability biases influenced the sentencing. However, Assistant State Attorney Melissa Clark emphasized the need for a harsh punishment, stating that Depa’s actions were almost fatal. Clark argued that regardless of any underlying conditions, Depa’s violent behavior warranted a significant consequence.
